Chapter Twenty-Two

“Buttercup answer me.” I could hear Lois screaming on the bridge, but I could hardly tear my eyes away from the spot where Olamer’s ship had disappeared from view. I couldn’t believe it. Bubbles was gone, and I had just handed her over, like a sack of old groceries.

“Buttercup please.” Lois’s voice came to me again, but this time it jolted me out of my fog. Bubbles was not the only one who was in trouble. Buttercup had sustained massive damage. If she was gone too ...

I forced myself to turn away from the viewport and face the reality that I may have lost not one, but two of the most important beings who had ever come into my life.

I ran, but my feet felt like stones. I wanted to curl into a little ball and pretend all of this hadn’t happened. That I hadn’t caused it to happen. Why did I have to steal those parts, worse, why had I decided on Olamer as our target? Now Bubbles and Buttercup were in terrible danger. I had to play pirate and now others were suffering the consequences.

When I jogged onto the bridge, I saw Lois standing before the display screen, both hands splayed against the ruined surface. She sobbed in big, angry breaths and her head was turned just enough for me to see the tears streaming down her face. Lin seemed to be systematically touching every screen, button or lever on the bridge. None if it seemed to be working. The screens did not flare to life, the buttons did not light, and levers did not ... do whatever levers were supposed to do.

I hurried forward and put a hand on Lois’s shoulder while I used the other to try and pull her hands away from the shattered view screen.

“You’re going to cut yourself.” I lifted one hand away then the other without much resistance, then I walked her over to her chair.

Twitch glided in out of nowhere and landed on my shoulder and made a sad squeaking little noise as Lois tried to compose herself.

“What are we going to do now?” She caught her breath several times, then she inhaled deeply and managed to get herself under control. “We’re out here all alone. We can’t help Bubbles, we can’t help Lin’s people, we can’t even save ourselves.”

I opened my mouth to say something, but nothing came out. She was right. I should have done more to stop Olamer. Should have done more to stop all of this from happening.

“We aren’t going to give up.” I turned away from Lois and started pounding on the touchscreen panels myself, picking up where Lin had left off. “This isn’t over. We’re still alive. There must be something we can do. I’m so sorry I dragged you into all of this, Lois. As soon as I figure something out, I promise I’ll—

“You will what?” The tone in Lois’ voice had that no nonsense grit she reserved for frightening grizzly bears. She stood and I turned to see her expression had switched from desperation to anger.
